Saving the Xihu Conservation Work

Connecting communities, youth, and rivers through grassroots action.

Siang River, Arunachal Pradesh
First Initiative

1. First Initiative

Our very first initiative was conducted at Pasighat Higher Secondary Government School under the Millennium Campus Network (MCN) Fellowship of Saving the Xihu.

Through interactive sessions, discussions, and awareness activities, we introduced students and the local community to the importance of the Xihu and the urgent need for river conservation.

Awareness Drive

2. Awareness Drive

In our second major outreach, we worked with the community in Kukurmara village, Chaygaon district. The program featured:

  • Skit Performance: A powerful street play highlighting threats to the Xihu.
  • Community Interviews: Elders shared nostalgic stories of frequent Xihu sightings.
  • High-Five to Xihu: Handprints on a large canvas as a symbolic gesture.
  • Letters to the Xihu: Community members wrote heartfelt messages.

AEC Awareness

3. Awareness Program at AEC

Conducted another conservation program at Assam Engineering College on 8th October 2025 through engaging plays and our signature “High-Five to Xihu” activity.

This initiative helped reconnect communities with their river heritage and strengthened awareness across generations.

4. Xihu Festival

Our flagship event — the Xihu Festival — was entirely organized by students and young people.

  • Speeches and research presentations by experts
  • Impactful skit performances to raise awareness
  • Stalls promoting handmade and sustainable local businesses

The festival brought together students, locals, and environmental enthusiasts, building strong momentum for long-term conservation.

Government Initiatives & Regional Efforts

Government Initiative
Government Stakeholder

Saving the Xihu supports and amplifies key government and institutional efforts, including:

  • National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) and Brahmaputra River conservation programs
  • Initiatives by the Assam Forest Department and Arunachal Pradesh Biodiversity Board
  • Protected areas and sanctuaries for river dolphins
  • Policies focused on pollution control, sustainable fishing, and responsible river development

We strengthen these efforts through active youth and community participation.
